Naming convention

A .gov.scot domain name must reflect the legal name of the organisation registering the name, it should be chosen to minimise confusion with other organisations and ensure clarity of geographic remit (i.e. a local organisation must not imply through their domain a national reach).

Domains should contain only standard ASCII characters, and must not include hyphens, underscores, internet protocols (HTTP, FTP etc), postal codes, abbreviations or acronyms (Unless in common use), exceed 64 characters in length, be fewer than 3 characters in length

Gaelic language

In accordance with the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act (2005) public bodies, local authorities, and agencies providing a service in Scotland where there is a difference between their English and Gaelic names may want to consider registering both English and Gaelic language domains, for example highland.gov.scot and gàidhealtachd.gov.scot.

The .gov.scot domain supports all the characters in use by the six native languages of Scotland: English, Scots, Gaelic, Orcadian, Shetlandic, and Doric.
